What do the stars and squares mean?

Von Thomas Bez am 08.02.2010

In some representations in addition to the list of dog names other icons are displayed.

  • Star with a number: Offspring is registered in the database. The number is their number.
  • Square: A photo is deposited.
  • Circle: Show results are available.

Changes in the Access Policy

Von Thomas Bez am 25.10.2008, aktualisiert am 31.10.2008

There will be changes at the access to the Briard Pedigree after the 1.11.2008. The database will only be accessible to a closed user group as of this day. This means that the use requires a registration first. The registration is carried out via the registration page of TEDESCA.NET <http://www.tedesca.net/register.php>. As soon as you have received your password, you can log in with this password and have full access to the functions of the database.

But I am already registered as a user

Assigned passwords remain valid. This means that there will be almost no change for you provided that you are already a user of the database. The only difference is that you must log in before you can use the database. Clicking on the word Login! in the header row of any page is the easiest way to log in.

The database uses so-called cookies to recognize recurring users. Provided that you did not choose to automatically delete your browser's cookies and the Internet server of the database recognizes your cookie you will be logged in again automatically when you return from previous visits.

I have put links from my page to pedigrees in the database

We are pleased about every link on our pages. Please take the following into account:

1. Links to the initial page of the database in the form http://www.barnim.net/pedigree can remain unchanged.

2. There is a number of links directly to pedigree pages. These links should be changed as follows so that the visitors of your site can see the pedigree without having to log in:
Till now: http://www.barnim.net/pedigree/show/46966.html
Future: http://www.barnim.net/pedigree/freelink/show/46966.html
(This is an example. Please adjust the numeric string Italic[46966] according to the previous link.)

3. There are some links directly to kennel profiles. These links should be changed as follows so that the visitors of your site can access it without having to log in:
Till now: http://www.barnim.net/pedigree/kennel/2005.html
Future: http://www.barnim.net/pedigree/freelink/kennel/2005.html

Does this cost money in future?

No! The Briard Pedigree is a noncommercial information service. The registration as well as the use of the database are and remain free of charge. Prerequisite for granting access is that you have a special interest in the Berger de Brie breed - for example because you are a breeder, you are active in dog sports and training, you have a scientific or other grave interest.

Why is this necessary?

The database is primarily made for insiders who have experience with dogs and look for information from breeding, scientific or other grave interest. Many evaluations of the database (for example genetic analyses or reverse pedigrees) were accessible for registered users only right from the beginning.

To provide a picture as complete as possible about the breed, Briards both from within and outside the FCI breed are included in the database. Doubts were expressed from circles of the German FCI breeders that users of the database could not qualifiedly distinguish between FCI and non-FCI breeds in the database. To approach these doubts, we reduce access to the database even more strictly than before on the special audience with which we can presuppose qualified dealing with the information.

How you can create and change database entries

Von Thomas Bez am 14.01.2008

"Dear Mr Bez, please find attached some scanned pedigrees, pictures and some dog show results. Thank you for your efforts." – We like to help, but unfortunately we can not spend the effort to extract the data of single dogs from pedigrees and enter them in the Database. There are about 60.000 Briards in this Database and every year 5.000 new are added. If it took us only one minute per entry, this would be more than four days work around the clock...

For this reason we equipped the Database with tools that allow you to prepare all changes on your own. We just have to review and to release them. (But please note: All changes will undergo a plausibility check </weblog/1178472258:309058.html> before they are published.)

1. Add an entry: On the Database portal page, under the headline "Submit your information", you find a button "Create new entry". When you press this you are forwarded to a data entry form. Please double check the digits you entered as spam protection key before you finish your input.

2. Add a new kennel entry: On the Database portal page, under the headline "Submit your information", you find a button "Create new kennel entry". You are forwarded to the respective entry form.

3. Change an entry: Search for the dog you want to change, for example by entering a significant part of its name in the input field under the headline "Search". When you found the pedigree page for the dog, press the button "Edit entry" in the upper right of the screen. You will see a pre-filled input form where you can add, change or delete as desired.

4. Change a kennel entry: In a similar way you get to the kennel detail page. In the upper right of the screen you see a button "Change entry".

5. Add or change a picture: On the pedigree page, press "Add picture" or "Change picture", respectively. You can then upload a picture from your computer.

6. Please read here </weblog/1182201526:803239.html> how you can add dog show results to the Database.

It is a different thing when you provide a printed stud book volume. In this case we do of course the electronic data acquisition. Stud books are organised in a way that we can extract the relevant data of complete litters easily and efficiently.

We need up-to-date information for the Briard Database

Von Thomas Bez am 04.01.2008

As of December 2007, the Database has several hundred of registered users and countless guest visitors. As much as 30.000 enquiries per month show that this information resource is valuable and enjoyable for many Briard fanciers. We want to keep this up.

The breed of the German clubs BCD <http://www.briardclub.de> and CfH <http://www.cfh-net.de> is regularly registered in the Database as the stud books arrive. The breed outside Germany is somewhat falling behind. Therefore we want to invest more time in future to intensify the registration of the European and world-wide breed.

It would be a very valuable help for us if you could provide us with current information about the Briard breed outside Germany. This could be electronic or paper copies of stud books, lists of litters or any other relevant documents.

At least following information has to be included:

  • name of bith and stud dog
  • kennel name (as registered with the F.C.I.)
  • names, gender and colour of the puppies

Following information is usually available, too, and will be recognised:

  • day of birth
  • stud book numbers of the puppies and issuing breeding club
  • HD results of the parents

You can send us information in the following ways:
1. email to bez@tedesca.net
2. facsimile to +49 (30) 944 19353
3. letter to Thomas Bez, Bochumer Strasse 6, 16341 Schwanebeck, Germany

When you send us paper copies, please let is know if you want to have them back.

If you agree we would like to mention you with a link to your Internet pages to thank you for your support.

The Websever can send you your password

Von Thomas Bez am 05.12.2007

Why is the "What if" simulation not possible?

Von Thomas Bez am 24.11.2007

When you start a "What if" simulation it may happen that

  • dog or bitch are not in the database,
  • dog or bitch are in the database without any ancestors, or
  • both are in the database but the gender is incorrect for one of them or both.

In this case we appreciate if you take the initiative and supply the missing information. You could also ask the breeder to do so. We are really delighted if a breeder proactively registers a complete litter - this does not happen very often.

If you find only name and gender in the database for some dog this may arise from participation in a dog show which is stored in the database. In this case a minimal entry with just name and gender will be created if not yet existing.

In some views the kennel name is shown without articles and prepositions

Von Thomas Bez am 19.05.2007

In headlines and list views, kennel names show without articles and prepositions. This conduces to legibility of the lists and better visual design of the pages. (See http://www.barnim.net/pedigree/klist.html for an example.)

Eamples of omitted text elements are:

  • de, de la, du, des
  • von, aus
  • of
  • van
  • z

Dog names are always shown with their complete and correct kennel name. On the kennel deteil pages (e.g. http://www.barnim.net/pedigree/kennel/2005.html) also the complete name is shown under "Kennel:".

You can change the database language by clicking on the flag or the language tag in the headline

Von Thomas Bez am 07.05.2007, aktualisiert am 11.01.2008

The database is designed in a multi-lingual way. An arbitrary number of languages is possible but currently the database is is only available in English, French and German.

If your language settings have already been stored, your selected language will be shown in the headline of the window.

1. Languages already supported by the database will be indicated by their country flag.
2. Languages not supported will be indicated by a language tag (e.g. SE for Swedish, RU for Russian etc.) Instead of the not supported language, English will be used.
3. If no language setting has been stored yet, the databased will be displayed bilingual in German and English.

If you want to change the database language please click on the flag or the language tag in the headline.

If you could volunteer to translate the database to other languages please send a message to bez@tedesca.net.

All changes to the data base are examined manually before release

Von Thomas Bez am 06.05.2007

The quality of the data is crucial for the usability of the data base. That means for example:
- material correctness
- no duplication of entries
- uniform ways of writing
- use of the official spellings
- uniform use of abbreviations
- etc.

Therefore all changes to the data base are examined manually before release. This can take some hours, usually however not more than three days.

Each data base entry can have a picture added

Von Thomas Bez am 06.05.2007

Each data base entry can have a picture added. The picture is shown both in the pedigree view and in the detail view. By clicking on the picture it can be downloaded in full resolution.

If several pictures are assigned to an entry, only the last one uploaded will be displayed. You can update in this way an existing picture.

Navigate to the pedigree view and select the button "Add picture" or "Change picture" on the top right of the window.

Please do only upload pictures if you are the copyright owner or if you have the consent of the copyright owner that you may publish the picture.
